Good greenhouse management requires an understanding of the processes that determine crop production. These include how microclimate affects crops, and how the greenhouse structure, the technology installed and its management, together with conditions outside the greenhouse, affect microclimate.
The course ‘Greenhouse technology’ we teach at Wageningen University is a unique combination of crop science, physics and engineering. These are different scientific disciplines and often the much-needed communication between them is hindered by not speaking each other’s ‘language’. It is our experience that ‘Plant Science’ students taking the course are often uneasy about ‘technical’ topics whereas ‘Biosystems Engineering’ students struggle with crop physiology.
